About Urban Garden Workshop

At Urban Garden Workshop, we help urban, suburban, and rural homesteaders grow their own food and live more sustainably. Our goal is to empower self-sufficiency through simple, functional, and beautiful garden products.

We design and build raised beds, planter boxes, chicken coops, and chicken runs using FSC-certified and reclaimed wood. Every kit is crafted for easy assembly and made to last—combining practical design with rustic, natural appeal.

Operating out of Ukiah, California and Waynesboro, Virginia, we ship across the U.S. and serve customers who care about sustainability, resilience, and local food systems.

More than just products, we offer tools for transformation. By supporting everyday growers, we aim to reconnect people to the land and their roots—one backyard at a time.

Our Bosch Saw in Action

Where It All Began

Urban Garden Workshop began in 2012 in California under the name Laughing Chickens. What started as a small operation building chicken coops from reclaimed redwood fence boards quickly evolved. As more customers asked for garden solutions beyond coops, we saw an opportunity to expand. That realization became the foundation for what is now Urban Garden Workshop—a company dedicated to crafting sustainable products for resilient living.

Today, our team includes skilled carpenters, permaculture specialists, and passionate urban gardeners. We work out of character-filled industrial workshops where, while the chickens wander and cluck contentedly, we’re busy building some of the finest handcrafted garden products available.

We’re proud to offer sustainably made raised beds, planters, coops, and more—delivered straight to your door, competitively priced, and built to last.

From Our Family to Yours

My name is Cael Kendall, and I’m the founder of Urban Garden Workshop. For over 20 years, I’ve been dedicated to bringing ecologically sound, reclaimed wood products to market—and helping people reconnect with the land in the process.

I grew up in the old-growth forests of Northern California and British Columbia, where I witnessed the impact of deforestation firsthand. That early experience inspired a lifelong commitment to sustainable forestry and low-impact design. Over the years, my work focused on repurposing quality materials and reducing waste wherever possible.

Eventually, I discovered that urban farming—especially building backyard chicken coops—was the perfect way to combine my passions. Not only did it allow me to reuse high-quality reclaimed redwood that would otherwise end up in the landfill, but it also gave families like mine the opportunity to live more self-sufficiently.

Our chicken coops are more than just shelters—they’re predator-proof, low-maintenance structures that double as functional works of art. Each hen house is built with care using reclaimed redwood fencing, heavy-duty galvanized hardware cloth, and thoughtful design features to ensure proper ventilation and durability.

I’ve tested every model in my own backyard. My family enjoys fresh eggs daily, and my kids love spending time with the hens—feeding them, collecting eggs, and learning where their food comes from. Chickens are not only easy to keep, but also excellent for pest control and composting.

At Urban Garden Workshop, we continue to refine our designs to help chickens live healthy, safe lives—while offering coops that harmonize beautifully with your home and garden. Reclaimed redwood is naturally rot-resistant and long-lasting, making it ideal for outdoor use in any climate.

We invite you to browse our collection of backyard chicken coops, learn more about our process, and contact us with any questions. We’re here to help you start—or expand—your journey toward a more sustainable lifestyle.
